The neighbourhood of Holyrood started developing in the 1950s, making it one of the oldest and most mature Edmonton communities. It was founded in the early 1900s and since then, it has had four names. In 1912, it was called both Mount Pleasant and East Edmonton Gardens. A couple of decades later, the area was called Balmoral, and in 1953, the area was renamed Holyrood because of the duplication of subdivision names.
